The 38-year-old actress was arrested on December 17 for supporting protests in Iran in several Instagram posts where she was seen removing her veil.
Several personalities and authorities in the world of cinema had called for his release. This Wednesday, Iranian actress Taraneh Alidoosti was released from Evin prison on bail where she had been detained since December for supporting the protest in Iran.
The actress’ mother, Nadereh Hakim Elahi, announced the news via an Instagram story posted this Wednesday. Taraneh Alidoosti’s lawyer, Zahra Minooei, also confirmed the information to the Isna news agency.
“Today my client, Ms. Taraneh Alidoosti, will be released from Evin prison after paying her bail,” she said.
Open letter
Taraneh Alidoosti is famous abroad for starring in award-winning films by director Asghar Farhadi, including The customerOscar for best foreign language film in 2017. She also starred in Saeed Roustayi’s film Leila and her brotherspresented at the Cannes Film Festival in 2022.
The 38-year-old actress was arrested on December 17 for posts on Instagram in support of the protests in Iran, in which she notably denounced the execution of demonstrators and where we see her removing her veil.
On December 22, nearly 500 personalities and workers in the cinema world, including actresses Kate Winslet and Marion Cotillard and directors Ken Loach and Pedro Almodovar, had called for his immediate release in an open letter and the Cannes Film Festival had also expressed to strongly condemn this arrest.
Several Iranian artists arrested
The protest in Iran was triggered by the death on September 16 of Mahsa Aminia 22-year-old Iranian Kurd who died after being arrested in Tehran by morality police, who accused her of breaking the Islamic Republic’s strict dress code for women.
Since then, hundreds of people have been killed, thousands arrested and two 23-year-old men have been hanged in connection with the unrest. Several Iranian artists such as filmmakers Jafar Panahi, Mohammad Rasoulof and Mostafa Al-Ahmad, singer Shervin Kapour or Kurdish rapper Saman Yasin were also arrested.
