Aryeh Deri sits in the government. The leader of the religious party Shas, a major figure in the country’s politics and heavyweight in the government, was convicted in 2022 in a fraud case. The Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Interior, Health and “peripheries” had undervalued the estimate of a property in Jerusalem in the context of a sale to his brother. He had negotiated with the court, claiming to distance himself from political life, and thus obtained a reduced sentence and could not in theory hold an elective mandate for seven years.
