Jerusalem, Israel.- The Israeli army entered a refugee camp near Jericho, in the West Bank, on Saturday and raided houses that it said served as hideouts for Palestinian attackers.

Some shootings took place in which six Palestinians were wounded, two seriously, according to the Palestinian Health Ministry, in a town that has seen less violence than others in the West Bank.

The army said it had raided the Aqabat Jabr camp southwest of Jericho, in the occupied West Bank, looking for suspects in an armed attack on an Israeli settlement last week.

Last Saturday, in an atmosphere of extreme tension after the deadliest Israeli military incursion in two decades and two subsequent Palestinian attacks in east Jerusalem that left seven dead, the army said a Palestinian opened fire at a restaurant in the settlement near Jericho.

The man fired once and fled, causing no injuries. The Army asserted that several Palestinians had taken refuge in their homes with the help of relatives and were planning future attacks.

To force the fugitives to turn themselves in, a military backhoe smashed into the walls of a house while an Israeli officer yelled threats over a loudspeaker. Residents said they received text messages urging them to keep children inside and avoid clashes.

The suspects and their relatives slowly left one of the houses and turned themselves in, the military command said. Security forces reduced the house to rubble.

Palestinian protesters threw stones and Molotov cocktails at the military jeeps and some men opened fire. The army opened fire, wounding six, the Palestinian Health Ministry said.
