Guest of the show Confidential on RTL this Saturday September 30, Thomas Dutroncson of Jacques Dutronc and Françoise Hardy, returned to his relationship with Serge Gainsbourg at the microphone of Ophélie Meunier: “I knew Serge especially when I was a child (…) We saw each other regularly. We had fun, we had good times… I think he loved me a lot, there was a pretty strong bond between us. The last time we saw each other, Charlotte (Gainsbourg) said to me: ‘It’s crazy, you know Serge, he really loved you.’ We saw each other quite regularly. I was going to his place to spend some time. Sometimes we listened to music…”, he confided. While he was not predestined for a musical career as a child, Thomas Dutronc nevertheless recognizes that it was Serge Gainsbourg himself who passed on his taste for music : “I was a kid, I was a little shy, he admitted to Ophélie Meunier. I listened to a lot of music. I was interested in it but I wasn’t doing it at all yet. Unfortunately, I started when Serge had already left. I regret this so much. I don’t think I would have dared to ask him anything. I think he had a kindness for me. I would have loved to enjoy it musically if he had been able to give me advice.”

Although he was only 17 years old when Serge Gainsbourg died in March 1991 following a heart attack, Thomas Dutronc remembers someone as quite a joker, even a “big child” : “He liked funny stories. We spent a lot of time telling funny storieshe stressed. I remember someone who was very tender, mischievous… he liked to play pranks. He was also immensely sensitive. I really regret having been so young. I was one of the last to see him. I was just 16 or 17 years old. I was still a kid. I still feel like a kid at times today.” And to add: “I listened to his records. He gave me his complete set when I was 13, 14 years old. He also gave me a channel (hi-fi), I was so proud of it. I loved all his records but I didn’t talk to him about them. I was under his spell.”

Serge Gainsbourg was also known for his excessive consumption of cigarettes and alcohol. At the microphone of RTL, Thomas Dutronc made a point of set the record straight about the singer’s hygiene : “It disgusted me when people said he was dirty etc., because he was so elegant, well dressed. He was always careful about what he put on, he smelled good… I loved giving him a kiss because he smelled good. At the very end, I saw moments where things went completely off the rails, but that’s not what I remember at all.”he defended.
