Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg posts a photo on his LinkedIn profile that shows a picturesque backdrop. The breathtaking mountain range is surrounded by a forest through which a stream flows. “Last week I turned my back on everyday life. (…) I’m traveling in the forests of Montana. In the northwest of the USA. Without internet. Without cell phone reception. The nearest village is two hours away. A satellite phone for emergencies. Nine days without News,” explains the former politician. Before questions can even arise about whether he left Germany because of the announcement of his separation, he emphasizes: “An escape from reality? Not at all.”

Rather, with the trip he encounters a reality that he has temporarily lost sight of. “A reality without the accompanying background noise of the opinion jugglers of our time. Decoupled from political disputes. From rumors. From big and manufactured scandals. From hypocrisy, voyeurism of fate and constant indignation.”

“Don’t submit to other people’s emotions”

These days, when he is alone with his thoughts, he remembers the words of a deceased acquaintance. He always kept calm in difficult life situations. When zu Guttenberg once asked him how he could remain so calm, he replied: “Don’t subject yourself to other people’s emotions. Never respond spontaneously to notifications and letters that affect you and only read the previous day’s newspaper. You will be surprised How many current excitements then turn out to be just a joke.” In the USA, Karl-Theodor zu Guttenberg now seems to have put a lot of distance between himself and any excitement. Once there, he can leave the hustle and bustle behind, switch off and fully enjoy the “calmness of everyday life in Montana”.
