Even years after the death of fashion legend Karl Lagerfeld, his memory is treasured – and that of his closest companion.

That’s why Choupette, the deceased’s beloved cat, has now been officially invited to the Met Gala, according to the US tabloid New York Post. And what sounds somehow strange is almost self-evident for the fashion industry.

To clarify, the legendary Met Gala (held on May 1st), officially a benefit, is THE Superbowl of fashion in the fashion world! Because this is where the crème de la crème of celebrities meet year after year in the most spectacular dresses that Hollywood designers have to offer. All under the strict supervision of fashion patriarch Anna Wintour (73). Because the event is organized by Vogue, which Wintour publishes.

According to some of Lagerfeld’s friends, the cat was the only creature that could always calm the fashion legend

The theme of this year’s Met Gala is Karl Lagerfeld’s fashion legacy

And among those celebs is Lagerfeld’s cat, Choupette. She even has her own agent: Lucas Berullier. Berullier told the New York Post, “It’s an event honoring Karl Lagerfeld’s legacy, and Choupette is obviously a central part of that legacy.” when Choupette is around, which is kind of magical”.

The theme of this year’s Met Gala is “Karl Lagerfeld: A Lineage of Beauty.” It will celebrate the iconic German designer who worked for Chanel, Fendi, Balmain and countless other fashion houses until his death in February 2019.

Lagerfeld got the cat from model Baptiste Giabiconi

Born on August 15, 2011, the Birman kitten was originally owned by French model Baptiste Giabiconi. He got the cat for his birthday from friends and named it after the French nickname for cute girls: Choupette.

This year, Giabiconi asked Lagerfeld to babysit the cat around the Christmas holidays. The designer was hesitant at first – but eventually agreed and fell head over heels in love with the cat. “I realized that Choupette made Karl very happy,” Giabiconi told The New York Times. So he decided to let Lagerfeld have the kitten.

The rest is fashion history: Choupette became the most famous cat in the world, and Lagerfeld even dedicated a fashion line to his beloved animal. “He used to say, ‘In my life, Choupette takes precedence over everything else,'” Berullier said. “She was everything to him.”
