Those who resist Linky will ultimately not be required to install it. It will be possible to do your readings yourself until 2025 without having to pay extra. From 2025, it will still be possible to keep your old meter, but you will have to pay a total of €61 per year to Enedis to continue to do so.

It has been several months since we mentioned to you the fact that the Energy Regulation Commission (CRE) wants to invoice refractory users to the Linky meter from January 2023. Initially, Enedis wanted to invoice €8.30 every two month (€49.80 per year) to subscribers who continued to refuse the installation of the Linky meter and who did not transmit their self-read index to Enedis.

No, you will not be forced to install the Linky meter

As indicated by Enedis, it will be possible to record your own electricity consumption without having to checkout until 2025. You can do this directly on the Enedis website or by telephone. The arrival of a technician to carry out the measurement will then be neither necessary nor charged.

The EDF subsidiary has in fact recognized that it will be possible to legally keep your old meter, provided you do your reading yourself. After 2025, those recalcitrant at the Linky meter will still be able to continue to do their reading by themselves, but will have to pay a total of €61 per year to Enedis, i.e. approximately 5.10 euros per month.

In the process of being deployed by Enedis since 2015, the Linky meter was to replace all the meters in France by 2021. But faced with numerous criticisms from individuals and the CNIL, the installation is falling behind schedule. In 2018, the CNIL decided to put Direct Energie on notice. In recent years, the meter has therefore become the enemy to be shot down by some, accused of inflating electricity bills.

Since last year, households with a Linky meter have had to pay an additional €130 on their annual bills. A cost of €10 per year on average and per household. The Court of Auditors estimates that Enedis will have invested 5.7 billion euros to equip 90% of French homes with a Linky, and that at least 2 billion should be reimbursed by 2030.
