Lolita, the orca at the Miami-Dade Aquarium, dies

Lolita, the oldest captive orca, died at the Miami Aquarium at age 57. As announced by the mayor of Miami Dade Levine-Cava.

The whale was born in 1966 and was captured at the age of 4, on August 8, 1970 in Pacific waters, in the state of Washington.

Animal rights groups made lolita the focus of a decades-long campaign, complaining about her living conditions and the inadequate size of her tank.

There were plans to return the famous orca to its native waters in the Pacific Northwest, which would have ended the long and controversial battle over the future.
