LUMA requests an increase of 4.1 cents kilowatt hour in the cost of electricity

The LUMA Energy consortium requested this Wednesday from the Puerto Rico Energy Bureau (NEPR) an increase of 4.1 cents per kilowatt hour (kWh) for the month of September in the cost of electricity.

Given this, the spokesman for the Popular Democratic Party (PPD) in the House of Representatives, Ángel Matos García, classified this request from the company in charge of the transmission and distribution of electric power as a “Christmas assault”.

LUMA claimed that the request is due to a difference in the adjustment factors.

“This increase in the cost of electricity is a violation of the economy and an abuse against our people. It is unacceptable that LUMA Energy seeks to increase the cost of electricity at a time when the economy is at its worst,” said Matos García.

“In September, Puerto Ricans are already preparing for the Christmas season, which is why this is LUMA’s “Christmas assault”. In addition, it is a hard blow to the quality of life of Puerto Ricans and to the financial stability of small and merchants, who are already struggling to stay afloat in a difficult economic environment,” he added.

The increase request is based on the provision of accelerated adjustment, which has generated great concern among citizens, according to the representative.

“We must question the impact that this measure would have on the economy of families and on the business sector of our island. Transparency and responsibility must be a priority in these decisions that directly affect the population,” said Matos García.
