A few days ago, Apple unveiled new MacBook Pros accompanied by a next-generation Mac mini with M2 chip. As crazy as it sounds, the new Pocket Mac does a whole lot better than a Mac Pro that sold nearly four times as much.

Apple’s Mac Pro is still offered at €6,499 while Apple’s new compact personal computer costs only 699 € for the base model, making it less than a tenth the price of Apple’s Intel-powered workstation.

The Mac mini crushes the Mac Pro in a first benchmark

On Twitter, GregsGadgets published two benchmarks conducted with Geekbench 5. Shown are the single-core and multi-core scores of the Mac mini M2 and the Intel-based Mac Pro. To his surprise, and ours as well, the Mac mini gets not only almost double the performance in the single-core test, but it easily beats the workstation in the multi-core test as well.

  • Mac mini (M2 chip) : 1944 single-core, 8790 multi-core
  • Mac Pro 2019 (Intel chip) : 1019 single-core, 8037 multi-core

These results mean that customers and professionals will no longer need an expensive Mac Pro to get the job done. However, just because the Mac mini beats the Mac Pro in Geekbench 5 doesn’t mean it will win in every test. Unfortunately, aside from Geekbench 5, GregsGadgets hasn’t posted any other results, so that’s all we have for now.

The only downside to owning a Mac mini M2 is that whatever configuration you buy, you’ll have to stick with it, because thea RAM, storage and SoC are soldered to the motherboard, which is the exact opposite on the Mac Pro. But even if you add more RAM and storage options, an upgraded Mac mini will still be cheaper than Apple’s current workstation.

This is obviously due to the performance of its M2 chip and above all, that of the M2 Pro, which Apple unveiled recently. As a reminder, the new Mac mini is available from €699 to €929 with an M2 chip and €1,549 with an M2 Pro chip.
