Magic: The Gathering sets are made up of dozens of cards, but there is always a space reserved for a handful of legendary. We’re talking about cards that take the form of key objects, places, and people in the history of a set, and usually don’t exceed 15 per published set.
However, that amount may even be too much by community standards. As collected in WargamerMagic designer Mark Rosewater has noted in his personal blog who are considering in Wizards of the Coast the possibility of reducing the number of legendary cards for each set.
We’ve talked about lowering the average number of legendary creatures in Magic IP sets. Universes Beyond, due to its nature, will still require a lot of legendary creatures, as named characters from an IP are a big draw.
That has been his response to a fan’s question if the sets could include less than 10 legendary cards, although Rosewater himself clarifies that sets related to Universes Beyond will have to follow the usual pattern of recent years. Legendaries are widely used in the Commander format and have been released over the years 2,194 cards with these characteristics.
