A magnitude 6.8 tremor was recorded by the US seismological service on Thursday in eastern Tajikistan, an Asian country south of Kazakhstan and west of China.

The Earth shook on Thursday in Asia. Shortly before 6 a.m. in Murghob, Tajikistan (1:37 a.m. in Paris) a magnitude 6.8 earthquake was recorded near the border with China, indicates on its website the United States Seismological Service (USGS).

A sparsely populated area

The USGS estimated that “few or no residents” will be exposed to landslides from the quake. Its epicenter appears to be in Gorno-Badakhshan, a semi-autonomous region in the east that borders Afghanistan and China.

A magnitude 5 aftershock rocked the region about 20 minutes after the initial quake.

This sparsely populated territory is surrounded by the imposing Pamir Mountains.
