Man attack on scooter leaves 1 dead and 2 injured in NY

NEW YORK – An 86-year-old man was shot dead and at least two other people were seriously injured on Saturday in a attack committed by a man who, according to the police, was shooting randomly from an electric scooter at cars and pedestrians in Queens.

Authorities are holding a person possibly involved in the attack, the New York Police Department reported.

The shooting began shortly before 11:30 a.m., when the 86-year-old man was shot multiple times in the Richmond Hill area. He later he died in a hospital.

About a mile away and less than 10 minutes later, a 63-year-old man was shot in the shoulder and taken to a nearby hospital, where police said he was in serious but stable condition.

A few minutes later, the assailant shot a 61-year-old man in the torso. He was admitted to the Jamaica Medical Center Hospital and his condition was critical.

Police said there was another shooting nearby, but could not confirm that it was related to the previous attacks.

With one person detained, a police spokesman said that at the moment the population was not under threat.

The spokesman was unable to provide additional details, including information about the man being held and his motives as investigators are still trying to determine what sparked the spate of shootings.
