Manchester City took a huge step towards reaching the Champions League semi-finals for the third straight edition by thrashing Bayern Munich 3-0 on Tuesday.

Goals from Rodri, Bernardo Silva and Erling Haaland left City with a comfortable lead after the first leg at the Etihad Stadium.

Bayern traveled to England with an immaculate record in the current tournament, standing out with resounding victories against Inter Milan, Barcelona and Paris Saint-Germain.

But under new manager Thomas Tuchel, the German giants looked helpless against City’s punch.

The English club took the lead after 27 minutes with a left-footed shot from Rodri from outside the area.

The visitors threatened with a reaction after the break. Leroy Sane made three demands on Ederson, including once when he went one-on-one with the Brazilian goalkeeper.

But City gave their second blow after a mistake by Dayot Upamecano, Bayern’s French defender who lost a ball very close in the area. Jack Grealish yielded to Haaland, whose cross was headed in by Bernardo in the 70th.

Haaland shouted his goal in the 76th by sliding in to push in the ball from John Stones. It was the Norwegian striker’s 45th goal in all competitions this season.
