Marjane Satrapi wins the Princess of Asturias Award for Communication and Humanities

MADRID.- Marjane Satrapi, historian, director Franco-Iranian film director and painter, was awarded on Tuesday with the Princess of Asturias Award of Communication and Humanities for being: “an essential voice for the defense of human rights and freedom,” said the jury.

Satrapi, 59 years old and born in Rasht, Iran, established herself internationally with the novel graphic Perspolis, which narrates, in black and white, his childhood and adolescence in the Iran of the Islamic Revolution and of which four volumes have been published.

“The cartoonist is a symbol of civic commitment led by women. Due to her audacity and artistic production, she is considered one of the most influential people in the dialogue between cultures and generations,” added the jury minutes.

Princess of Asturias Award

Last year, the Communication and Humanities award went to the Italian writer and philosopher Nuccio Ordine, an expert on the Italian Renaissance, who died weeks after receiving the recognition.

The award, which has a financial award of 50,000 euros (53,000 dollars), is the second of the eight awarded annually by the Princess of Asturias Foundation and which are presented at the end of October in a ceremony in Oviedo, in the north of Spain.

The Catalan singer and composer Joan Manuel Serrat was awarded the Princess of Asturias Award for the Arts last week. In the coming weeks, the winners in the other categories will be announced, including Literature, Science, Sports, International Cooperation or Concord.
