Denver (USA), Apr 28 (EFE) presidential race.

“Spoilers. Right now we are very focused on the city of Monterrey”, he said in statements to EFE during the first Summit of Cities of the Americas, held in Denver (Colorado, USA).

“Honestly, I love the work we are doing and above all the direct contact with people. So, we will continue there for a while longer”, added the mayor, son of the presidential candidate assassinated in 1994, Luis Donaldo Colosio Murrieta.

Some surveys have indicated that Colosio, from Movimiento Ciudadano (MC), leads the preferences within the Mexican opposition to be a candidate in the 2024 elections, when the term of Andrés Manuel López Obrador ends.

The mayor of Monterrey, the capital of Nuevo León, the industrial engine of northern Mexico, opined that his state is “in the international spotlight” after Tesla decided to build a large electric vehicle plant there, after intense negotiations with Elon Musk.

Colosio assured that Monterrey and Nuevo León are “a great ecosystem to invest in,” but he also admitted that there are “great challenges” in terms of mobility and climate change that must be improved.

“You have to have a city in order so that the investment climate can continue in Monterrey,” he stressed.

In terms of corruption, the mayor claimed to have created a Secretariat for Innovation and Open Government so that administration procedures are “accessible and transparent” and to be able to “little by little recover the trust of the people in the institutions.”

Likewise, he described his participation in the Summit of Cities as an “enriching experience”, because it allows him to study “success cases” from different municipalities and forge alliances with international organizations and other municipalities.

The Summit of the Cities of the Americas is a new regional forum created by United States President Joe Biden during the 2022 Summit of the Americas in Los Angeles.

In its first edition, held in Denver (Colorado, USA) this Thursday and Friday, it welcomes more than 200 mayors from the continent, such as those of Mexico City, Bogotá, Miami, Rio de Janeiro, Montevideo and Santo Domingo.

During the summit, the head of government of Mexico City, Claudia Sheinbaum, who sounds like a possible candidate for the presidency for Morena, López Obrador’s party, told EFE that Mexico is ready for its first female president.
