MBTA announces closure on the Green Line for several days for repairs

The MBTA said it will close the B branch of the Green Line for 12 days in July while it works to replace more than 2,000 feet of track and make other improvements.

Shuttle buses will replace trolley service from Kenmore to Boston College from July 17-28.

During the closure, MBTA crews plan to completely replace more than 2,000 feet of track at Packard’s Corner and between Harvard Avenue and Allston Street. The T will also replace duct banks, underground ducts, and repaint crosswalks, bike lanes, and platform edges.

“I made a commitment to the public when I accepted this responsibility to restore safety and reliability,” MBTA General Manager and CEO Phillip Eng said in a news release. “The recent derailment is a stark reminder that we have work to do, and speeding up this work when schools are closed is the best way to address a long-standing problem. This 12-day full access closure allows us to safely and more efficiently implement track renewal along Branch B of the Green Line and, most importantly, improve service.”

Service along the B branch of the Green Line was affected earlier this month due to a streetcar derailment that occurred at Packard’s Corner in Allston. At the time, MBTA officials said the section of track was scheduled to be replaced over the summer.

“We are committed to providing our passengers with the best quality of service possible,” MBTA Head of Capital Transformation Angel Peña said in the written statement. “A full access closure allows crews to perform critical updates on an accelerated schedule, providing the enhanced service our passengers deserve. We understand how frustrating service deviations can be. However, as a team, we will work as quickly and safely as possible to deliver these much-needed updates.”

MBTA will host an in-person open house on June 28 at 6:00 pm at Boston University’s Sleeper Auditorium to discuss the upcoming closure.
