Bingo Allison said he had many doubts about his path, but in the end he was ordained a priest

Bingo Allison is 36 years old and says that since he was little he believed in the way of God and now he has been ordained as the first non-binary priest in the Church of England, a church that follows a different current from the Catholic one.

“My views used to be very traditional and certainly very conservative. Some might call them intolerant and there was a lot of ignorance and a lot of ‘otherness’. I didn’t take the time to learn from other people’s experiences. I was definitely in a lot of denial and part of that denial manifested itself in denial of the identities of others,” Allison told the ‘Liverpool Echo’.

He also said that given his orthodox upbringing, he did not easily assume his orientation because he was told from a young age that homosexuality is a path of sin and he was frowned upon by his family, however, he found out about the term ‘queer’ when he was ordained to be a vicar. term used to ‘express that sexuality and gender are complicated, and that it can change over time and not quite fit into one identity or another’.

However, halfway through the religious path, he had considered withdrawing because of doubts about his sexuality, saying that it was much more difficult to have come out of the closet and then to remain in it, and that there were many times when he questioned his identity.

Likewise, he said that, among so many doubts, he received a message through his essay on the way in which God created the Earth, and a paragraph from Genesis caught his attention, and it says: “And God created man in his image , in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them”, Genesis 1:27., which he considered an epiphany.

“I was sitting there in the middle of the night when I realized that I might need to change my life. It was a deeper spiritual experience, I correctly felt that God was leading me to this new truth about myself. One of the things that has remained in my ministry ever since is that transition and coming out can and should be a spiritual experience, as well as an emotional, social, and sometimes physical experience.”

Unlike other religions that fire their ministers for their sexual orientation, Bingo Allison is the first priest to define himself as ‘non-binary’ after not identifying with the female or male sex.
