In an email sent out to all owners of the original Meta Quest VR, the company announced that it plans to stop supporting the hardware and will begin limiting its functionality. Software and security updates will continue until 2024 and users will be able to continue using their headsets and compatible applications. However, it will not be possible to use the social functions such as inviting others to your Meta Horizon Home, or visiting someone else’s. You will also not be able to join or create a party.

The announcement comes as no big surprise to those who have followed the VR scene and when Meta’s subsidiary BigBox VR announced last summer that it planned to withdraw support for its popular VR fps Population One on Meta Quest. Then a lot of people understood what was going on. Sad but expected and the hardware will still be usable, albeit in a slightly limited form. Otherwise, Quest 2 is also available for those who want to continue supporting Meta in their VR adventures.

Are you using Quest or Quest 2? And do you plan to keep doing that or even migrate to something new like the Playstation VR2 when it’s released on February 22nd?

Jaguar VR, the one thing all cool kids need.
