Mexico confirms the death of two of its citizens in the fires in Hawaii

MADRID, 16 Ago. (EUROPA PRESS) –

Two people of Mexican nationality have died as a result of forest fires on the Hawaiian island of Maui, which have claimed more than a hundred lives in total, according to the Mexican Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Personnel from the Mexican Consulate in San Francisco have already traveled to the island and are in contact with the families “to provide them with the necessary assistance and accompaniment.” It also maintains communication with local authorities “to confirm the procedures and protocols to follow”, given that the emergency still persists.

“The Government of Mexico reiterates its commitment and priority to provide comprehensive consular assistance and protection to Mexican people on Maui, and conveys its condolences to the affected families,” reads the Ministry’s statement.

The US authorities take it for granted that the number of victims from the fires will continue to increase in the coming hours, since, as the governor of Hawaii, Josh Green, has acknowledged, barely a third of the burned surface has been traced.
