Microsoft also relies on artificial intelligence for the hardware (TO). This is now with the chip manufacturer AMD cooperates, reports Bloomberg.
Microsoft takes over part of the Cost of developing AI-based features for AMD’s processors and graphics chips. In return, AMD will help Microsoft “Athena” to develop. This codename hides a processor that Microsoft wants to use in data centers that offer AI services and train AIs.
Athena complements Nvidia GPUs
Even for the giant Microsoft group, this is no simple side project. A separate development department was created for Athena. This is from the former Intel manager Rani Borkar and is said to have almost 1,000 employees. Microsoft should already $2 billion put into the development of Athena.
The fact that AMD is now also being brought on board indicates that Microsoft’s management team is not progressing quickly enough with the work on Athena. According to Microsoft, Athena is not what they want Nvidia-GPUs replace those previously used in the AI data centers. Instead, Athena should be added as a supplement. According to Microsoft, Nvidia’s GPUs are only available in limited numbers.
AMD wants a piece of the AI pie
The current AI hype is likely to be partly responsible for this. Companies that train their own AI models and are therefore competitors for Microsoft also need plenty of Nvidia GPUs. And to keep the edge that Microsoft has with the Integration of ChatGPT into its software and the Bing search has reached, the AI capacities are to be expanded.
AMD hasn’t had much of the AI hype yet. When it comes to chips with AI support, you are still far behind Nvidia technologically. Through the partnership with Microsoft, one could catch up faster here and thus benefit from the AI hype – before it ends and the situation normalizes, or before other chip providers try to enter the market.
