After ending support for Windows 7 in January 2020, Microsoft intends to “say goodbye” to another operating system: Windows 8.1. This version will have its end decreed next week, more specifically on the 10th. Interestingly, the date established by the Redmond giant is less than a month away from the end of support for Google Chrome.

goodbye time

Windows 8.1, released in 2013, was a kind of “apology” from Microsoft to the various complaints related to Windows 8. This new version featured the return of the Start button, a unified search system, and other features. While it was more positively received, it fell far short of having the loyal user base of Windows 7.

After the established date, computers with this operating system will not receive new security updates or any technical support. THE Microsoft mentions that some people will be able to upgrade to a newer version, but the recommendation is to buy a new PC with Windows 11 or 10, which will be supported until October 2025.

Windows 8.1 interface

In any case, it is important to remember that Windows 8.1 machines will continue to work after January 10th, but the user experience will be compromised. For example, the system will not be able to make purchases from the Microsoft Store and apps will only be available for updates until June 30th.

However, the most important issue remains the fact that this version does not receive new security updates, something that will inevitably leave the software completely vulnerable to exploits that could compromise the security of users.
