Milei takes oath and announces months of economic adjustment

In Argentina, the far-right Javier Milei, who announced that he will apply a painful adjustment to combat inflation and multiple controversial reforms that aim to end the current populist model, assumes the presidency of the country in a ceremony in Congress.

Milei, 53 years old and leader of La Libertad Avanza, swore the Constitution for a four-year period in the presence of right-wing world leaders such as the president of Ukraine, the prime minister of Hungary and the head of the Spanish Vox party.

Milei succeeds the Peronist Alberto Fernández as head of State.

Milei said in his inauguration speech outside parliament and before thousands of followers: “No government has received a worse inheritance than the one we are receiving.”

The incoming president added that there is no way to avoid an economic adjustment in the coming months. Alluding to the Peronism that governed almost completely the last four decades, he expressed: “they have ruined our lives.”
