Dwarf Fortress, a simulation game above all

Have you ever wondered why Minecraft put so much emphasis on this simulation and role-playing side? For a game whose (initially) main interest remains its sandbox side as simple as it is intelligent, the approach seems far from natural. In reality, the choice to push these mechanics to such a level comes from the initial inspiration of Notch, creator of Minecraft. The latter is neither more nor less than a game developed in ASCII characters called Dwarf Fortress. Moreover, if you are ever interested in the origins of Minecraft and the fate known by its designer, you can watch the dedicated JV Legends episode available here.

Under its air of Twingo, Dwarf Fortress is actually a Ferrari simulation. For good reason, it was designed and developed by two brothers over a good twenty years, constantly adding new features to their games. Moreover, the latter has no serious competitor in terms of complexity and detail. One of the keys to the success of Dwarf Fortress is largely its very simplified graphic style, which uses strokes, special characters and font colors. Thanks to that, the game was able to evolve very quickly by always becoming more and more advanced in the situations it simulates. In the episode of JV Legends available above, you are given a small example based on a dead cat and alcoholism. And no, it’s not a kamoulox.

Dwarfs, do you want some here

At the heart of the game, there is therefore a small troop of dwarves. Your goal will be to make them prosper as long as possible, but in reality the interest of the game is not limited to that. Specifically, the number of features present is so high that you could have restarted a game every week since the game was released in 2006 and never felt like you were reliving the same one. To recapture the feeling of the original 2006 game while opening it up to a wider audience, Bay 12 Games released a re-release of the game with pixel art graphics. This version that will spare your eyes a little more was released on December 6, 2022 on PC.
