BUENOS AIRES.- The minister of Argentine securityPatricia Bullrich, began this Sunday a four-day visit to The Savior to know the “method” applied by the president Nayib Bukele to confront the gangs.
“Together against the criminals who murder massively and believed they were owners of our countries and societies,” said Bullrich on the social network .
Bullrich toured the megaprison inaugurated in 2022 with capacity for 40,000 inmates alongside the Minister of Justice and Public Security of El Salvador, Gustavo Villatoro, who “welcomed” the official “to the safest country in Latin America.”
“It is a true pleasure to receive you in El Salvador, I am sure that this visit from Argentina will be enriching, you and your team will be able to see first-hand the ‘Bukele Model’,” indicated the minister in X.
The Argentine government in a statement about the tour noted that Bullrich is “interested in the entire structure that allowed crime to be drastically reduced in El Salvador” which “until not long ago was a country dominated by the violence of the maras (gangs, ed.) )”.
During her stay in the Central American nation, President Javier Milei’s minister will meet with Bukele and other senior security, defense and intelligence officials.
Bukele, in power since 2019, is waging a “war” against gangs under an emergency regime in force since 2022 that allows arrests without a court order.
According to official figures, until February of this year, 12,500 gang members from the Mara Salvatrucha (MS-13) and Barrio 18 were imprisoned in the megaprison under that regime questioned by human rights organizations for the detention of “innocents who suffer” in the jail.
The emergency regime, under which more than 80,000 alleged gang members have been detained, was decreed by Congress at the request of Bukele in response to an escalation of violence that claimed the lives of 87 people between March 25 and 27, 2022.
