Handball World Cup

Shortly before the start of the Handball World Championship, a few things have changed, especially for those who want to watch from Germany. So there was now a major change of moderators at ARD and ZDF, which will broadcast the sporting event again this year.

In recent years, the moderators Yorck Polus (ZDF) and Alexander Bommes (ARD) have repeatedly accompanied the annual major events such as the European and World Championships in handball. After Bommes had already announced at the beginning of the week that he would not moderate this year due to health problems, Polus has now followed suit.

Katrin Müller-Hohenstein replaces Yorck Polus

At Yorck Polus, the reason is his new post as head of the ZDF main editorial team for sports, which he has had since the New Year. Before that, he was editor-in-chief of the sports studio reportage for almost five years, which meant that he was regularly in front of the camera – for example for major handball events.

This year, moderator Katrin Müller-Hohenstein will accompany the sporting events in Poland and Sweden. The expert at her side remains Sven-Sören Christophersen. He is sports director of the Bundesliga club TSV Hannover-Burgdorf and has already been in front of the camera together with Polus.

And the ZDF also changes with the commentators. The DHB team’s opening game against Qatar will be commented on by the experienced Christoph Hamm. Martin Schneider commented on the preliminary round game against Algeria.

Former world champion Markus Baur will sit by her side.

Alexander Bommes is missing due to health problems

Alexander Bommes had previously canceled his participation in the Handball World Cup for ARD. He cited health restrictions as the reason, which he, like many other people, had to accept. Now he wants to complete his further recovery, which is why he “consequently wants to do without the moderation of this year’s Handball World Cup”.

Presenter Stephanie Müller-Spirra, who described the job as “a huge task”, is now to stand in for him. However, together with Dominik Klein at her side, she will “give everything” and hopes that her colleague Bommes will recover quickly.

In the past, Bommes and Klein, as former handball professionals, have accompanied the European and World Handball Championships since 2012, albeit initially only as interviewers.
