The Government has delivered more than 800,000 passports to Salvadorans abroad from June 1 to date, according to the Vice Minister of Diaspora and Human Mobility, Cindy Portal. Only in 2022, 243,600 passports were issued and in government management a total of 829,914, she detailed.

“A passport means changing lives. Without a passport you cannot cash a check or enroll your children in school and next week we will inaugurate passport headquarters 51 in situ (on site)”, said Portal.

This office will be based in Ecuador and will be the first of 24 locations by 2023. Other cities such as Moscow (Russia), Beijing (China), Ankara (Turkey), Belgium and Geneva (Switzerland) will also have these services, he added.

For this Government, it is a priority to provide due attention to the diaspora in different nations of the world; which is always connected with their families in El Salvador and, in most cases, contributes financially.

Another important aspect is the guarantee of the rights of Salvadorans, with the issuance of the Unique Identity Document (DUI), which only in 2022, was possible for 182,870 people in the 23 representations of the National Registry of Natural Persons, (8 in United States, three in Europe, one in Canada and one in Mexico). Thus, the diaspora is heard and attended with quality services, fulfilling the mandate of President Bukele.

In addition, in line with the Special Law for the Exercise of Suffrage Abroad, with which Salvadorans residing abroad will be able to participate in the 2024 elections. Nationals, with the DUI and/or passport, can now choose their political representatives through a remote voting system over the internet and in-person electronic voting; all this to implement the free, equal, transparent, personal and secret exercise of the vote.

In addition, this opens the door for those who wish to run for popularly elected positions, who may register without further requirements than those established in the Constitution of the Republic, Electoral Code, Political Parties Law and established regulations.
