Mexico City.- Senator Mónica Fernández Balboa from Morena ruled out giving fast track to the pending legal reforms in the electoral “Plan B”.

Asked if her bench would give special treatment to carry out these reforms, the president of the Governance Commission said that senators are obliged to act in accordance with the law.

“From the moment the Board of Directors turns over the minutes to the commissions, we as commissions are obliged to carry out the procedure established by law,” he said.

Which implies, he explained, following the procedure: calling a working meeting of the committees 72 hours in advance, sending a draft opinion 24 hours in advance to finally open the opinion for discussion and analysis.

“We here in the Chamber of Senators have always tried to take all the steps to comply very well with the legality of the Legislative process,” he said. “If there has to be discussion of the issue, let there be discussion of the issue.”

During the presentation of the book “La Democracia no se toca”, by Lorenzo Córdova and Ciro Murayama, the advisers of the National Electoral Institute warned about the effects that “Plan B” could have on the country’s democracy.

When you hear the statement that democracy is at risk, what do you respond?

“I am very sorry to hear these reckless statements. They are saying that democracy is at risk, but the grounds for an election are clearly stipulated in the Constitution, and I want to remind them that the Constitution was not modified.”

The morenista regretted that the narrative that the INE advisers have handled about Plan B is a fallacy without legal foundation, with the intention of imposing fear.
