Mother of cyclist hit by a bus calls for justice

The night the accident occurred will remain in the memory of a mother who lost her son.

Carmen Guerreo, mother of the victim, trembles again when she sees the video from a bus security camera that shows the moment in which the young man is run over by a Broward County transit driver.

“The word is terrible, I still do not accept it and the truth is that I dream of him every day, today I dreamed of him.”

The tragic outcome for the 20-year-old occurred when he was crossing his bicycle at the intersection of SW 84th Avenue and Broward Boulevard.

“The recklessness and negligence of a person took his life and what he asks of me in his dreams is justice because he did nothing.”

Carmen and her lawyer insist that the crossing has a green pedestrian signal, and that the bus driver made a right turn on red, without looking, and ran over him.

“And the way they handled everything from the day of my son’s accident is unfair, they weren’t even able to call or answer me. I got there with the GPS.”

In the police report of the accident it says that the traffic was heavy, that the roads were wet and that it was raining. And although an internal Broward traffic investigation indicates that the incident could have been prevented if the driver had looked to the right, the same document also says that the actions taken against him were ruled out.

Now the legal representation of this family assures that they will sue the Broward County transit seeking that they assume the responsibility and the payment of 300 thousand dollars as compensation.
