One of the great mysteries surrounding special research is that old story that one day, the moon will collide with the earth. To clarify that theory, experts from the POT explain whether that event will occur or not.
As the report published on the website of Nat Geo in Spanishthe Solar System has maintained a balance between the solar bodies that make it up, which has promoted that the planets and their satellites do not collide with each other.
The above is the reason why scientists from the US space agency are not worried about the idea of our natural satellite colliding with the planet. However, the possibility exists, although it is a remote probability.
It is possible, but unlikely
Tony Cook, professor of physics at Aberystwyth University, assures that the Moon is in no danger of suddenly colliding with the Earth: “There is a balance between the Earth and the Moon. It is an equilibrium point called the barycenter and the two bodies revolve around it.”.
Cook is correct, since the Moon has a stable orbit around the planet. For at least 4.5 billion years, the Earth’s gravitational force has been pulling it towards us, but it is still (and will continue to be) extremely far from us.
Due to the gravitational relationship that both bodies have, it is practically impossible for them to collide with each other. There would have to be a significant change in gravity for this cycle to be interrupted or changed.
Among the possibilities is that of an asteroid of colossal dimensions hitting the satellite and causing it to hit the Earth. Indeed, only one event would alter the millennial balance between our planet and its only natural satellite.
“Technically, it is possible that the Earth and the Moon could collide in the very distant future, but it is highly unlikely.”, concludes NASA.
