We all know them, we all stream them: We’re talking about Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney +, DAZN, WOW and many other streaming service providers.

But which of the numerous streaming platforms is the most popular? Is it actually Netflix, or has Disney+ now caught up thanks to such successful series as “Simpsons,” “The Bear,” and the Marvel and Star Wars series? A current study provides answers.

How did the study authors proceed?

The study was carried out by the management consultancy Simon Kucher. The study participants were surveyed between April and May 2023. A total of around 12,000 people from twelve different countries took part.

The majority of respondents come from China, the USA, Germany and Australia. Most respondents are between the ages of 40 – 49 (18 percent of respondents), 50 – 59 (18 percent) and 70 or older (18 percent). According to the study authors, the sample is representative.

The study is spread across many different countries – but the study authors also crown a streaming king for Germany.

Which streaming services are the most used?

The study differentiates between “customers with one streaming service”, “customers with two streaming services” and “customers with three streaming services”.

➡️ WOW and DAZN: In all three categories, the two streaming services WOW and DAZN brought up the rear and were consistently in the single-digit percentage range. DAZN can only claim a decent 21 percent for customers who use three streaming services.

➡️ Disney Plus is in third place among customers with two and three streaming services. 72 percent of customers with three streaming services use Disney Plus, while only 25 percent of customers with two streaming services use the “Mouse King” video platform.

For those customers with only one streaming service, Disney is 3 percentage points closer to the bottom performers DAZN (2 percent) and WOW (1 percent).

Compared to the study from the previous year, Disney+ is catching up at the same time: As a second subscription, the streaming service can record an increase of 10 percentage points compared to the previous year, and for the third subscription it is even 14 percentage points.

➡️ Amazon Prime Video: Amazon Prime Video takes second place in all three categories. In terms of percentage, Amazon Prime Video is approaching the first place (87 percent for Amazon). three streaming services68 percent two streaming services42 percent a streaming service).

But where does Netflix situate itself in the study?

➡️ Netflix: The first place in all three categories is not surprising, as Netflix always wins first place. At a streaming service it is 49 percent two streaming services 80 percent and at three streaming services: 92 percent.

As mentioned above, Amazon is almost on par with Netflix in the three categories. Netflix’s lead is, at least in the context of this study, relatively small: 7 percent lead for “one streaming service”, 12 percent for “two streaming services”, 5 percent for “three streaming services”.

Which streaming service is most popular in Germany? As far as the leading video streaming providers in Germany are concerned, the study authors crowned two clear winners: Netflix and Amazon. But Disney Plus is also becoming more important for streaming users from Germany, especially as a second or third subscription.

Are you amazed by these study results, or are you surprised by the continued dominance of streaming giant Netflix?
