A live-action adaptation of the video game series Assassin’s Creed from Ubisoft is being made, and now it has lost its showrunner. Since, at the end of 2020, Netflix announced that it would develop a television series based on the successful action-adventure franchise. Since then, both Netflix and Ubisoft have been pretty tight-lipped about the show’s status, aside from periodic confirmations that the series was still in the works.

Now, there’s finally been a new update for Assassin’s Creed, but it’s probably not the news fans were hoping for. Since, in a new conversation with Collider, Jeb Stuartwho was chosen to direct Assassin’s Creed for Netflixrevealed that he has since left the project.

And while this might seem cause for concern at first, Stuart didn’t seem to indicate that his departure from Assassin’s Creed was due to any negative circumstances surrounding the series. Instead, he pointed out that the divorce was mutual and simply allowed a new group to step in and come up with their own ideas for what the show will look like:

“I think it was a bit like an executive move from Los Angeles to London, and it allowed the London group, who, unfortunately, had to inherit my vision of what it was rather than get to develop their own vision. So I think that’s fair,” Stuart said of the reason for his departure.

“I know it’s going to be great every time it comes out. I think the guys at Ubisoft are fantastic. I think it’s a great franchise. It was a good mutual moment of moving forward for both sides.”

With Stuart now out of Assassin’s Creed, it remains to be seen who steps in to fill the empty space. Currently, both Ubisoft and Netflix have yet to publicly announce what time period or story Assassin’s Creed will focus on, nor is there any word on which actors might appear in the series. Despite this continued silence, it looks like 2023 will finally bring more information about the adaptation.
