Increasingly popular as an alternative to linear television: media libraries. The ARD is also happy about the growing number of viewings. You can find an overview of what the broadcaster network has to offer here.

2021 recorded the ARD media library more than two billion video views. This is an increase of 62 percent over the previous year. The reason for this is not only the corona pandemic, which has changed viewing behavior, but also the investment in your own streaming platform: it has long since ceased to be used only for the secondary use of broadcast content. More and more exclusively produced formats are available. For others, the following applies: online first, ie programs are available before they are broadcast on TV.

What’s new in the ARD media library? Our overview provides orientation.

Film highlight in May

MDR/BBC/The British Film Institute/Supernova Film Ltd

Stanley Tucci and Colin Firth in “Supernova”.

supernova

The British drama tells the story of an elderly couple who, after more than twenty years of relationship, have to deal with a stroke of fate: Tusker (Stanley Tucci) has dementia. This drives him and his partner Sam (Colin Firth) to set off in an old RV and visit places and people that mean something to both of them. It is particularly tragic that Tusker wants to end his life early, because his illness increasingly means that he can no longer write – as a writer this is particularly fatal. Sam fights back against his partner’s plan…

Refreshing: The film does not address the fact that it is a gay couple. Rather, it is about the intimate relationship between two people who have to cope with the fact that one of them goes before the other. Privately, Firth and Tucci have known each other for a long time – maybe that’s why they mimic the familiar couple in a particularly authentic way.

“Supernova” is from the May 19th available in the ARD media library and will be broadcast on MDR on May 18 at 11:40 p.m.

Father and daughter: Also in season 2 of “MaPa” a dream team.

MaPa: Season 2

In Season 1, Metin (Max Mauff) suddenly found himself a single father after the death of his girlfriend. While these episodes revolved around how he tries to cope with life as a grieving father with baby Lene, season two takes a leap in time: Lene is now a witty five-year-old who knows what she wants – and Metin has overcome his fate to the extent that that he is ready to embark on a new love.

Again, the six 30-minute episodes are all about everyday life, and it doesn’t have to be boring, as this mini family from Berlin shows. Everything from funny to heartbreaking.

‘SadCom’, which was nominated for a Grimme award, originally ran on Joyn, but was canceled despite good criticism and taken over by ARD. Appropriately off Father’s Day (May 18) you can watch the worth-seeing series there soon in the media library or on May 26 and 27 (from 10:20 p.m. and 11:40 p.m.) in the first. For those who want to start from scratch, season 1 will also be available from May 18th.

New TrueCrime in May

ARD Crime Time: On the trail of a poisoner

True crime series are more popular than ever. The next story will soon end up in the ARD media library, and it begins – as so often – in a seemingly banal way: with a noodle soup. Ursula and Rudi G. feed them to their shepherd dogs, who then have to fight for their lives. As it turns out, the soup was poisoned. After the windshield on the couple’s car was smashed and Ursula was attacked with steel bullets, it’s no longer a coincidence. The detectives begin to investigate and find what they are looking for on a surveillance camera: the man who then enters the couple’s property turns out to be a member of Rudi’s tennis club and, shockingly, is a good acquaintance. As is so often the case, the motive for the crime was jealousy. Enrico R. had tried to get closer to Rudi, but was turned away, which drove him to take venomous revenge. Can the police bring the multiple offender under control?

The exciting series, produced by HR, consists of three half-hour episodes and is from 12th of May can be found in the ARD media library.

Revealed: The “Dirty Little Secrets” of the Music Industry.

Dirty Little Secrets (documentary series)

Spotify and other streaming providers have changed the music world – for the better for all music enthusiasts who can enjoy free listening, for the worse for many artists who can hardly make any money from it. The three-part documentary accompanies both long-established musicians such as Smudo, who has been in the business for decades as a member of the “Fantastic Four” and who has made it his task to do something about this situation, as well as those who have not been around for very long. For example, the Gießen German pop band “OK Kid” is accompanied in their work. Younger artists such as Balbina, Chefket and rapper Maeckes have their say, as does Rocko Schamoni and the icon Peter Maffay. It is also about investors in the scene and so-called ‘ghost musicians’ who are being tracked down investigatively.

In three episodes, the documentary offers a look behind the scenes of today’s German music industry. From the 31. May available in the ARD media library.

They juggle love, family and the problems of their generation between cleaning plans, creative experiments and the art of long-term study.
