New York Law Guarantees Fair Wages for Construction Workers: Here’s How

NEW YORK — A new New York law, signed into law by Gov. Kathy Hochul on Wednesday, seeks to provide construction workers with fair wages.

The legislation (S.4887/A.5608) will mandate that construction workers on projects that require excavation or roadwaying be paid a fair wage. This requirement encourages workers and local communities throughout New York State and contributes to reliable utility service for taxpayers.

“Our construction workers keep New Yorkers moving, but they are often underpaid for their hard and impactful work,” said Governor Hochul. “I am proud to sign this legislation that will provide construction workers with fair wages and allow them to support themselves, their families and our local economy.”

The legislation amends the labor law to enact the “road excavation quality assurance law” to protect workers on projects that require the excavation or opening of a road. This legislation requires utility contractors and subcontractors to pay wages to employees on projects where the issuance of a permit is required to use, excavate, or open a street.
