Newborns: Popular first names in Duisburg: Ali and Noah no longer in front

In 2022, the name Marie will again lead the list of the most popular girl names in Duisburg. The city of Duisburg will announce this on request. There are several surprises when it comes to boy names.

With 32 certifications, no other female first name in Duisburg was given as often as Marie in the past year, and no other name was more popular in 2021 and 2020. The second most awarded was Maria (27 times), followed by Sophie (23 certifications) in third place. The name Emilia, which was still the third most frequently given name in 2021, is in fourth place among the most popular female first names in the Rhine-Ruhr city.

There are three names in the top ten for the first time: Sofia (7th place), Leonie (8th place) and Mira (9th place). Compared to the previous year, the names Amira, Leni and Lia are no longer represented.

Most popular boy name 2022 is Hamza for the first time

The most popular male first name for newborns in Duisburg last year was Hamza, a total of 19 times it was recorded. Last year Hamza was eighth, but in 2020 he wasn’t even in the top ten. The old Arabic first name means “the strong” or “the steadfast”. Last year’s top boy names, Ali and Noah, are surprisingly absent from the new list.

There is another surprise in second place: while the biblical name David was not in the top list in 2021, it was the second most frequently notarized in 2022 with 16 times. Translated from Hebrew, the name means “the beloved”. Elias was also awarded 16 times.

In addition to David, Ben, Leon, Felix, Levi, Luca and Milan are also new to the list. The top list therefore brings many new products compared to 2021. In addition to Ali and Noah, Liam, Leo, Maximilian, Malik and Paul are not represented in 2022.

Around eight percent fewer births in Duisburg

According to the city administration, a total of 3,764 births were registered for the year 2022, of which 1,785 newborns were female (47 percent) and 1,979 male (53 percent). Statistically, around every tenth female newborn received one of the most popular female first names, and around every thirteenth male baby received one of the top names.

The State Statistical Office estimates the total number of births in Duisburg for 2022 at 4,700 – this also includes children who were born in Duisburg but were registered in other cities. Last year there were 5121, so there were around eight percent fewer newborns in 2022. The last time there were so few births in Duisburg was counted in 2015, at that time there were 4570.
