A land-based fish farm in Bjuv has been discussed back and forth for a couple of years. It is the company Nordic Salmon that wants to produce food fish, approximately 10,000 tons of salmon trout each year, in the municipality.

But the plans quickly ran into obstacles.

Protests from residents

The first planned placement was stopped after protests from the residents. Instead, the old Findus area in Sellberga was pointed out. Local residents also protested there, but that is not the main reason why the ruling politicians are now saying no.

– We have become more and more doubtful and now we change our mind, says Mikael Henrysson (SD), chairman of the municipal board.

He talks about a major negative impact on the municipality’s surroundings.

– It is above all about water and the environment. There will be many truck transports to the company. And they will use 800,000 cubic meters of water a year. We are a municipality where there is often a shortage of water in the summer, and then we want to prioritize the new houses to be built in Bjuv and the residents’ need for water.

Disappointed company – happy residents

Nordic Salmon’s CEO, Tore Lyng, regrets the decision.

– This is sad news. We have worked for five years on these plans and spent millions on them, he says.

The Social Democrats in Bjuv do not agree with the ruling party to say no to fish farming.

– In a time of increased need for Swedish self-sufficiency, it is extremely surprising that the majority chooses to turn down an environmentally sound investment in the food industry. In addition, it would in the long run mean many new jobs, says Ulrika Thulin (S).

The residents of Selleberga, on the other hand, accepted the decision with joy.

– We think it’s great. We are some neighbors who are going to toast in champagne tonight, says Ditte Karlsson, a nearby resident.

This is what local residents told SVT about the fish farm before the plans:
