Nurse among those accused in an operation against the “El Burro” gang

The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) carried out an operation this Thursday morning against a dangerous gang dedicated to drug trafficking in Caguas, led by the federal fugitive, Nelson Torres Delgado, known as “El Burro”.

One of the defendants was Sheila Luyando Fuentes, who is a nurse, for allegedly divulging patient information.

“Luyando Fuentes acted as a facilitator for the gang. She was an employee in the health care industry with access to private patient information. This defendant shared inside information to identify patients belonging to rival gangs who were receiving medical treatment to recover from shootings. In this way, it facilitated the efforts of the drug gang to locate and assassinate their enemies,” added Muldrow.

The executive director of the University Hospital for Adults (UDH), Jorge Matta González, confirmed that the woman worked in the institution.

“She is a contractor and not an employee of the hospital institution. Once the arrest became known, the company that hired the woman was asked to proceed to immediately remove her from her duties and began an investigation into the information to which this contractor had access and could have disclosed Likewise, I must admit that the announcement caused me great consternation because the actions of this person are not in keeping with our commitment to responsible service to patients and faithful compliance with the Law and the privacy policy. We trust our security agencies and the judicial system,” said Matta González in written statements.

THE OPERATIVE

In total, the feds served 38 arrest warrants. One of the places affected was the Morales neighborhood, which is controlled by Torres Delgado.

“The number one defendant is Nelson Torres Delgado, alias “El Burro”, a fugitive from federal authorities since 2017. Torres Delgado has wielded power over drug trafficking through the Caguas area since the early 2010s. Despite Being on the run, Torres has maintained control of the gang through violence, intimidation and engaging in violent turf wars against the other rival drug gangs,” the head of the U.S. Attorney’s Office in Puerto Rico, Stephen Muldrow.

The alleged members of the criminal organization were indicted by a federal grand jury on July 17 for conspiring to possess and distribute controlled substances in the Brisas del Dorado, Raúl Castellón, Turabo Heights, and Juan Jiménez García residential areas.

As part of the conspiracy, they used abandoned apartments in the public housing projects to prepare the drugs for distribution at drug outlets and gained access to many vehicles to transport money, narcotics, and firearms. For that purpose, the co-conspirators would steal cars or buy stolen cars from others to use in furtherance of drug trafficking activities.

The Police Bureau, Caguas Strike Force and federal bailiffs were part of the operation.
