In Germany, 640 food companies are now selling more than 1000 brands with the Nutri-Score nutritional value label. Companies in Germany have been able to use the five-stage Nutri-Score nutritional labeling for their products for a good two years. Color and letter combinations are intended to give consumers an orientation guide as to the composition of the nutrients in a product.
In addition, the energy content of the contained favorable and unfavorable nutrient calculated and assigned to a scale. This allows consumers to easily compare similar foods in terms of their nutritional value.

Of the Nutri Score was developed by independent scientists. The label has so far been used in Germany, Belgium, France, Luxembourg and Switzerland. The Netherlands and Spain are also showing great interest in a mission.

Scientists are already working on further developing the Nutri Score. According to the BMEL, their goal is to make this even more meaningful by using additional calculation bases and thus create even more clarity. With the new calculations, the evaluation of “general foods” such as yoghurt, pizzas or biscuits should be even more precise and brought into even closer agreement with the food-based nutritional recommendations.
Proposals for changes to beverages are also to be presented shortly and so-called fruit and vegetable components are to be taken into account.

According to the Federal Ministry, when the further developed Nutri-Score algorithm will come into force is currently being discussed in the joint steering committee of the Nutri-Score countries. The EU member states are currently waiting for a regulation proposal from the EU Commission, with which extended nutritional labeling should also be introduced at EU level and made mandatory.
