During the holidays, it is common for people to get out of their routine and take advantage of the period to eat out and discover new dishes. However, the new experiences can cause food poisoning.

Also known as acute gastroenteritis, intoxication is related to the ingestion of water or food contaminated by bacteria or viruses, such as Salmonella, Escherichia coli and rotavirus.

With the intention of preventing and avoiding problems on vacation, nutritionist Nara Oliveira, from the Tivolly clinic, in Brasília, points out ways to circumvent the risk of suffering from food poisoning. “The ideal is always to know the origin of what you consume and include natural products in your diet, such as fruits, coconut water and lots of mineral water”, she points out.

Even more common in the summer, acute gastroenteritis deserves attention on vacation because of excessive heat. High temperatures favor the proliferation of bacteria and fungi, which accelerate the decomposition of food, especially those that are improperly stored.

Learn how to prevent:

  1. Take your own snacks on the tours. When preparing the food itself, the person has better control of the hygiene involved in the preparation, therefore, it reduces the risk of food poisoning;
  2. Avoid raw or undercooked food. Prioritize options prepared at high temperature and consume them immediately;
  3. Avoid the consumption of homemade sauces, such as mayonnaise and butter. Everything indicates that the corn butter with salt, which is sold on the beach, for example, was not properly stored. “Not to mention the cooking water, whose origin is unknown”, warns Nara;
  4. Observe the hygiene of kiosks and snack bars;
  5. Pay attention to the temperature of refrigerators in the supermarket. It is important to check that the products are at temperatures below 4ºC, as they are safer against the spread of microorganisms;
  6. Do not consume deteriorated food, with altered color, odor and flavor. The packaging must be analyzed. Only buy if it is in proper condition;
  7. Wash your hands well. “In the pandemic, the importance of correct hand hygiene and personal hygiene became more than clear, not being different in cases of food poisoning”, emphasizes the nutritionist.

However, in case of carelessness, the specialist suggests how to combat intoxication. In addition to rest, it is recommended to drink plenty of fluids, such as water, coconut water and to adopt a light, balanced diet low in fat.
