With this show, ProSieben didn’t exactly put a brisk foot on the floor.

After just one season, the broadcaster is mothballing its format “The Masked Dancer” again. The industry service reported on Sunday DWDL citing ProSieben spokesman Christoph Körfer.

The dance show was actually supposed to ride the wave of success of the TV hit “The Masked Singer” and become a similar ratings hit for ProSieben – and initially everything looked like it: with 1.8 million viewers and a 12.5 percent market share, it succeeded debut. But after that, interest ebbed away until finally only single-digit values were achieved.

The musician and actor Oli P. (44) remains the only winner of the dance show so far: in January 2022 he prevailed against six other participants in a monkey costume. Among other things, the former GZSZ actor danced against the actress Wolke Hegenbarth (as a mouse) and the former boxer Axel Schulz (as a sheep).

The show was moderated by Matthias Opdenhövel (52), the advice team was led by DSDS winner Alexander Klaws (39) and moderator Steven Gätjen (50).

The “big brother” of the ProSieben disappointment, on the other hand, can continue: A new season of “The Masked Singer” is planned for the first half of 2023, and another season may come in the second half of the year. But that’s not certain yet.

Christoph Körfer explained to DWDL: “ProSieben is planning a new season of ‘The Masked Singer’ for the first half of 2023. We will present the programs for the second half of the year in good time.”

Previously, ProSieben had broadcast two seasons a year. Although the ratings fell, they are still above the broadcaster average. During the last season in autumn, “The Masked Singer” had two million viewers, and the market share in the target group of 14 to 49 year olds was almost 20 percent. The last winner was actor Daniel Donskoy (32): He won in autumn 2022 in a mole costume.

“The Masked Singer” was so popular that even live events were planned: A tour with 15 shows was to take place from spring – but these were recently canceled completely “due to the current macroeconomic situation”.
