When is One Piece Netflix release date?

The One Piece live-action series is coming. Featured in the weekly magazine Weekly Shōnen Jump (in which each chapter of the manga is pre-published) for the 20th anniversary of the work, the series is then confirmed to be broadcast on Netflix. News that comes just before the health crisis. This has a non-negligible impact on the world of entertainment since it postpones many shootings and complicates post-production. The One Piece series is no exception but announces cast members drop by drop. It was finally last August that we learned the end of filming and last week the release period: it’s official, One Piece Netflix will be released on the SVOD platform in 2023. The One Piece series is one of Netflix’s big projects. Not long ago, the SVOD platform evoked looking for its own Star Wars. In other words, a flagship product to rely on. A role to which seems to stick Stranger Things whose fifth and final season seems to be in the pipeline and already features two spin-offs. There is no doubt that the One Piece adaptation is an attempt for the platform to attract people while riding the planetary success of Eiichiro Oda’s work: more than 500 million copies have been printed in the world, a figure that only one other literary saga such as Harry Potter can boast. There is no doubt that the Netflix series One Piece will be available exclusively on this platform.

What is the story of One Piece?

One Piece is originally a manga created by Eiichiro Oda whose first chapters were pre-published in 1997. Gol D. Roger is considered the king of pirates. He is then captured by the Navy, the military body of the world government, and declares just before his execution that he has hidden his treasure somewhere. Words that trigger the mobilization of many individuals on the seas and therefore the golden age of piracy. The reader follows the adventure of Monkey D. Luffy, a young boy who also wants to become a pirate but inadvertently eats a devil fruit. This then turns him into a rubber man… and unable to swim. A major inconvenience for a pirate who does not demotivate him from pursuing his dream: he sets sail 10 years later and begins to recruit his crew for adventures as crazy as each other.

The Netflix series is a direct adaptation of Eiichiro Oda’s manga. The first ten episodes (which will constitute the first season) cover the narrative arc of East Blue: these are the first ten ~ eleven volumes of the manga which should therefore be adapted by the SVOD platform. However, it should be remembered that the series remains an adaptation. It is therefore not impossible that the directors and screenwriters make changes to transpose the work to a new medium and a new audience. : deaths of certain characters, introductions of other unpublished… Nevertheless, the first images put forward evoke a certain fidelity: the clothes of the characters correspond to those of the manga.

Who are the creatives behind One Piece Netflix?

As with the One Piece Odyssey video game, Eiichiro Oda is overseeing this adaptation by Netflix. These are two showrunners who are alongside the mangaka: Steve Maeda (X Files, Lost: the missing or CSI: Miami) and Matt Owens. Recently, the latter had mentioned having taken liberties with the original work and proclaimed his love for the manga: “I have to be the one to try and the one to miss, because no one in the TV and movie industry loves One Piece more than me.“There is also Tom Hyndman (Harley Quinn, Alcatraz) at work.

If it is Netflix which is in charge of the distribution, we observe that it is Shueisha and Tomorrow Studios in charge of the production. The latter is well known since he participated in the live-action adaptation of Cowboy Bebop (which we hope One Piece will not share the same fate) but also that of Snowpiercer. On the costume side, Diana Cilliers (District 9, Chappie) and Hetta Burger (Chronicle, Dredd) will be responsible.

What is the cast of One Piece on Netflix?

Unveiled in several stages, the cast includes many actors. Inaki Godoy will play Monkey D. LuffyMackenyu for ZoroJacob Gibson for Usopp (or Pipo), , Emily Rudd (Dynasty, The Romanoffs) For Nami and finally Taz Skylar who was cast in the role of Sandy/Sanji.

Morgan Davies (The Evil Dead) for Koby, Ilia Isorelýs Paulino (The Sex Lives of College Girls) for Alvida, Aidan Scott (Action Point) for Hermep, Jeff Ward (Hacks) for Buggy the Clown, McKinley Belcher III (Ozark) for Arlong and Vincent Regan (Troy) for Garp. It is also Peter Gadiot who will play the role of Shanks.

• Netflix’s budget for the series would be colossal: $100 million would be invested in the series. A huge sum of money, the first investments of which can be seen with reproduction in real life boats of several characters.

• The One Piece Odyssey game has been available since January 13 on PC, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series. It is an original story also supervised by Eiichiro Oda which allows to become familiar with the members of the crew. Watch out for spoilers though..
