Washington.- The arrest of Ovidio Guzmán López, leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, is crucial to combating the flow of fentanyl into the United States, which causes tens of thousands of deaths each year, Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine said.

The Senator from Virginia and vice-presidential candidate in 2016 recalled that the governments of Joe Biden and Andrés Manuel López Obrador agreed last summer to combat drug trafficking.

“In July, Presidents Biden and AMLO announced a joint task force to combat fentanyl trafficking,” Kaine wrote on his Twitter account.

“Guzman’s arrest is critical to stopping the flow of fentanyl that has hurt families in Virginia and across the country so much.”

The DEA seized the equivalent of 379 million doses of fentanyl last year, as the United States recorded more than 107,000 overdose deaths.

“These seizures – enough deadly doses of fentanyl to kill all Americans – reflect the DEA’s unwavering commitment to protecting Americans and saving lives by relentlessly pursuing those responsible for trafficking fentanyl in the United States,” says a statement from the US drug enforcement agency just released on Wednesday.

“The DEA’s top priority is to defeat the two Mexican drug cartels – the Sinaloa and the Jalisco (CJNG) – who are primarily responsible for the fentanyl that is killing Americans today.”

The United States offered a reward of 5 million dollars for Ovidio Guzmán.
