Nurse Kim Gibson, who lives in Australia, was one of thousands of health professionals diagnosed with Covid-19 during the pandemic. After developing an unusual symptom, she set out to use her experience to warn people about the disease’s consequences.
In an article published this week in the British Medical Journal Case Reports, Kim says he developed sudden sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL) five weeks after testing positive for Covid-19, in 2022.

“Evidence on the short- and long-term impacts of Covid-19 and vaccines is still emerging, and the purpose of this article is to highlight the lesser-known side effects of the virus,” says the researcher.
The condition, also known as sudden deafness, is defined as the sudden, unexplained loss of hearing, often in just one ear. Patients may experience mild hearing impairment or temporary or permanent total hearing loss.
One hearing loss study published in December 2022 showed that approximately one third of patients referred to a speech therapist after suffering PANS had a positive diagnosis for Covid-19. Other studies also revealed an increase in cases among asymptomatic patients.

Nurse Kim Gibson claims that she had the complete vaccination schedule for Covid-19 and developed a mild respiratory condition after being infected with the coronavirus, but hearing problems impaired her quality of life.
The health worker also suffered from tinnitus and severe vertigo, which made it impossible for her to drive. She was forced to reduce her workload and take time off from her studies.

“Hearing loss and associated symptoms can have a significant impact on a person’s quality of life and are closely related to anxiety and depression. This was a shocking experience for me which had a significant impact on my life for several months as I have never had a hearing problem before; not even an ear infection,” he said.
Kim is currently recovered and hears perfectly.
