Volleyball player Paula Borgo, 29, died this Thursday (5/11) from stomach cancer. The athlete discovered a tumor in September 2022 during routine pre-season exams, and stopped competing to undergo treatment.

Stomach cancer is most common in men between the ages of 60 and 70. According to the National Cancer Institute (Inca), 65% of patients with the disease are over 50 years old. This type of tumor is the fourth most frequent among men and the sixth among women.

The factors most linked to the development of stomach cancer are related to lifestyle. Overweight, consumption of alcohol, very salty foods and smoking, in addition to pre-existing infections (including by H. pylori) are some of the risk factors. In the case of Paula, who was an athlete and followed a healthy lifestyle, the cancer was probably genetic in origin.

According to Inca, stomach cancer is a silent disease, as it does not have specific symptoms. However, some signs may indicate that something is wrong and the right thing is to look for an expert to investigate the reasons for the problem when identifying any of them. Check out:

  • Loss of weight and appetite;
  • Fatigue;
  • Feeling of a full stomach;
  • Vomiting with or without blood;
  • Nausea;
  • Abdominal discomfort;
  • Pain when the stomach is palpated;
  • Blood in the stool;
  • Stools dark, pasty and with a very strong odor.

In more advanced cases of the disease, it is possible to identify a palpable mass in the upper abdomen, enlarged liver, swelling in the lower left area of the neck and nodules around the navel.

The diagnosis is made by upper digestive endoscopy and computed tomography. In early cases, the doctor may order an endoscopic ultrasound. When stomach cancer is localized, the main treatment is surgery associated with chemotherapy.
