Maternity wards and birthing blocks will continue to open on a rotating basis in the first three months of this year, following a plan that should be announced by the 15th, said the executive director of the National Health Service (SNS) this Wednesday.

“In the first quarter, we will maintain a scheme similar to what happened at Christmas and at the end of the year. We want to try to close all the dates“, said Fernando Araújo.

In an interview with the agency Portuguesethe executive director of the SNS pointed out that the plan for the first three months of 2023 will be launched “very quickly”.

“We have the meeting [de balanço do Natal e de Ano Novo] on the 10th. I hope that by the 15th, or thereabouts, [o plano seja apresentado]. The plan is outlined. We just need to see if there are any changes to be made”, she said.

Fernando Araújo pointed out that what is prepared for the first quarter of the new year is to maintain the rotation approach, in order to create “predictability” and be able to “coordinate a stable operation”.

“The objective is to have, in a geographic area, a consistent answer and to avoid that pregnant women are, until the last minute, trying to understand if that place will be open or not”, he summarized.
