PC games generate more revenue for Activision Blizzard than console games

In the middle of the Microsoft buying process, Activision Blizzard shared the results for the second fiscal quarter of 2023. Revenue generated by PC games was 1.26 billion dollars in the first six months, while consoles generated 1.19 billion dollars.

However, the most profitable segment for Activision Blizzard is mobile, thanks to the success of its King division. Games for Android and iOS generated 1.90 billion dollars in revenue in the same period.

The results also revealed that the Call of Duty franchise is more popular in the mobile world and on PC than it is on consoles. The mobile FPS version attracts 51% of the active player base, while only 8% play on Xbox and 16% on PlayStation. Shockingly, PC accounts for 25% of all gamers, surpassing both consoles.

Also, it was recently revealed that Microsoft considered it a mistake for Activision Blizzard to keep Call of Duty off Steam for a few years. Don’t make this choice may have made the PC gaming community even bigger than the company reported. The popularity and reach of Valve’s platform could have fueled its growth.

Activision Blizzard joins Capcom as publishers where PC outperforms consoles in profitability. The PC has proven to be a lucrative market for Capcom, and the same could be true for Activision Blizzard. That’s why, it is likely that they will continue with microtransactions and “Games as a Service”. However, if Microsoft steps in, there could be changes.
