What to do if the child gets sick over the holidays? A family doctor from Herne opens his practice for children over Christmas. All important information.

The Herne family doctor and palliative medicine specialist Anton Preißig opens his practice at Kirchstraße 109 over the Christmas holidays for routine examinations of children and young people. While pediatric practices and clinics are currently overcrowded in many places, the Westphalia-Lippe Association of Statutory Health Insurance Physicians (KVWL) has asked doctors from the region to offer unscheduled office hours.

Background: This year, not only Corona is causing full medical practices, but also flu and RS viruses are currently leading to many illnesses, especially among children in Germany. The result: there is a lack of fever juices, pediatrician appointments, hospital beds and nursing staff.

Herne – General Practitioner Anton Preißig: These are the additional office hours

In Herne, Anton Preißig’s family doctor’s practice opens unscheduled on the following dates:

  • Saturday, December 24th: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m
  • Sunday 25 December: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m
  • Wednesday, December 28: 2 p.m. to 6 p.m
  • Sunday January 1st: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m
  • Saturday, January 7th: 8 a.m. to 12 p.m

The campaign is not about improving emergency care for children, but about offering routine consultation hours, Preißig emphasizes. This would also relieve the clinics. In emergencies, such as acute abdominal pain, the Herner family doctor would still refer you to the clinics.

For the most part, however, respiratory infections are in circulation, says the doctor. “We are already seeing this in the family doctor’s practice. Many children come with viral infections.” It is important for the coming consultation hours that enough medication is available. Preißig contacted the emergency pharmacy for this purpose. He was able to pre-order some medicines.

“However, we do not know how crowded the practice will be. But I can imagine that a relatively large number of people will come,” he says. One trend can be observed that many parents have been anxious since Corona and are increasingly looking for professional advice. “It’s perfectly legitimate to accept the offer if you’re unsure,” says Preißig.

Praxis Preißig shows understanding for the need of parents

Nevertheless, he could advise parents to initially act symptom-oriented at home. “Fever is a normal disease process that does not require immediate medical attention. With a cold washcloth, that can be easily reduced.” Parents should see a doctor, especially if their child is weak, says the doctor from Herne.

“I have four children myself. You know how hard it is for the parents and then you just want to help a little,” says Preißig. His practice team also included a few mothers who also understood the situation of the parents. For these reasons, the team decided to open the practice over the Christmas holidays and beyond. The phone is turned off during the unscheduled office hours, you should come by personally. The special office hours are not intended for general practitioner patients.
