Police vehicle catches fire at Dulles airport

A three-wheeled police vehicle inside Washington Dulles International Airport caught fire on Saturday, filling the terminal with smoke.

According to the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority (MWAA), a battery-powered three-wheeler “used by MWAA police to patrol the terminal” caught fire near gate 1 of the airport departures area shortly before 8 pm

Video of the incident showed a plume of smoke in the air as the vehicle burned inside.

“Several fire extinguishers were used to put out the fire,” MWAA reported. “MWAA Fire with the assistance of the (Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department) opened the doors and used fans to remove (ventilate) the smoke.”

MWAA said two airport authority police officers were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation and are expected to be fine.

The area where the fire broke out was cordoned off until it was ventilated and passengers were able to re-enter, according to MWAA.

The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
