Portable air conditioners available for people in Condado Hidalgo

The Hidalgo County Community Service Center offers portable air conditioners for those who do not have one in their home and meet certain requirements.

Jaime Longoria, executive director of Hidalgo County Community Services explained that the elderly, those with some type of disability and young children should not suffer from the heat that is being recorded in the Rio Grande Valley.

Community Services has a program that allows them to give funds to families that have their air conditioner broken or get a new unit delivered.

“This year, instead of buying window air conditioners, we bought portable ones that move from room to room,” Longoria said. The help is only for families who don’t have a way to cool their homes.

“If the client comes, applies and qualifies, they can be given an air conditioner,” says Mary Garza, operations manager of Community Services.

These air conditioners will be delivered mainly to low-income people who live with children, the elderly or with someone who has a disability.

“We are going to ask for the birth certificate and the ID of everyone who lives in the house. For the children, only the birth certificate. We are also going to ask for information about their income,” Longoria explained.
