Yesterday, Saturday, Julian Weigl played 90 minutes for Borussia Mönchengladbach for the first time since January. One of the few positive news these days for the foals. In Weigl’s absence during his syndesmosis ligament tear, Borussia was only able to win one of six games. Sports director Roland Virkus also knows that the ex-Dortmund player has become important in the tenth place.
Speaking to ‘Sky’, Virkus discussed the establishment of a new management structure for the coming season, including the Benfica loan deal: “It’s clear that we’re talking to Benfica because Weigl can certainly be a building block.” Weigl has made 17 appearances in the Bundesliga so far and started 15 games. A yellow card suspension and the injury break prevented further appearances.
Weigl himself is also open to staying: “There are several parties involved. Basically, these are positive conversations. For me, the sporting perspective is of course important. And then there are also the financial aspects – not related to me. There is a purchase option that is too high for Gladbach. The clubs would have to come to an agreement first.”
Sticking point transfer
It could be tricky for Gladbach when it comes to permanent commitments. 15 million euros would be due to sign the 27-year-old. A sum that would be affordable under normal circumstances. But Borussia loses several regular players this summer without any equivalent value and has to cope with an upheaval without any major transfer gains.
