Speaking to ‘Sky’, Virkus discussed the establishment of a new management structure for the coming season, including the Benfica loan deal: “It’s clear that we’re talking to Benfica because Weigl can certainly be a building block.” Weigl has made 17 appearances in the Bundesliga so far and started 15 games. A yellow card suspension and the injury break prevented further appearances.

Weigl himself is also open to staying: “There are several parties involved. Basically, these are positive conversations. For me, the sporting perspective is of course important. Sticking point transfer

It could be tricky for Gladbach when it comes to permanent commitments. 15 million euros would be due to sign the 27-year-old. A sum that would be affordable under normal circumstances. But Borussia loses several regular players this summer without any equivalent value and has to cope with an upheaval without any major transfer gains.
